again. In mid January I needed to go to Queretaro, the capital of the state to

attempt to collect my flight tickets for Easter. That was a completely wasted

journey but it provided me with the perfect opportunity to explore this surprisingly large colonial city. I had been there before, but only to shop.  In that part of the city I had previously felt as if I could be any street in downtown U.S.A.  The historic

district that I visited on this January day was a very different experience. I spent an exhausting but very enjoyable time, exploring a large area stuffed full of beautiful old churches, fountains, and the many fascinating doorways. The place was full of colour, sounds, smells and of course a cloudless blue sky - and yes! This was January!

With Christmas and New Year over with, and memories of a great trip to Chiapas, beginning to fade, I felt the need to explore new territory

Three views of some of the

incredible doors and door knockers that abound in Queretaro.

After school on Mondays is Geology Club. We have had some really

interesting trips, particularly to some old opal mines to see if those who have mined there already have over-looked any precious gems. I do now have my own opal. I found it! It is maybe more than one

millimetre across and worth...well not a lot! In January we didn't go very far at all - just outside the school grounds in fact. Our objective was to search for old obsidian indian arrowheads. They (well one!) had been found there before. Neither of our January trips proved fruitful

But the scenery was good. In the top left photo you can see Pat Drum (deputy headmaster) leading a group of eager arrowhead hunters towards likely sites. The lower picture shows one of the scenic viewpoints on the walk.
